MBH Bank: a unified digital platform and faster process innovation with Mendix

After its triple merger, MBH Bank unified its processes with more than 40 Mendix applications in two years, supported by BlackBelt Technology as its Mendix partner.

In two years, MBH Bank developed more than 40 applications on the Mendix low-code platform, putting the processes left fragmented after the 2023 merger of Budapest Bank, MKB Bank and Takarékbank on a common digital foundation. BlackBelt Technology supported the bank's internal team as its Mendix partner with a template application, training and architecture practices. According to the bank, developing a new application now takes 13 days on average.

Background of the client and the collaboration

MBH Bank was created by the triple merger of 2023 and, according to the bank, today serves more than 2 million retail and corporate customers. The merger also meant that several hundred systems and processes had to be brought into a unified IT environment. The bank started working with Mendix in 2024 to deliver new solutions faster and to consolidate existing ones; BlackBelt Technology is the bank's Mendix partner in this.

The challenge

After the merger, key processes lived in different tools – Nintex, SharePoint and Microsoft Access – and many processes were still handled manually, with Excel spreadsheets and e-mail. The central IT team was therefore looking for a platform that met four requirements:

  • Fast delivery: new software in a short time, adapting to changing business needs.
  • Consolidation: replacing outdated or duplicated systems across the organisation.
  • Integration: seamless connection to the bank's remaining systems.
  • Less manual work: data-driven operation instead of Excel- and e-mail-based processes.

„We needed a tool that helps us quickly improve the efficiency of our existing processes or create new ones – independently of our outdated IT systems.” – Gergely Gacsal, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MBH Bank

The solution

The bank evaluated several rapid application development (RAD) platforms and chose Mendix: workflow automation, fast time to market, a user-friendly development environment and easy integration counted in the decision. The work was started by a seven-person internal team that had previously worked in end-user computing, led by István Sponga, Head of Operations Development. The bank brought in an experienced Mendix partner, moved from a waterfall model to agile working, and aligned development with its own software development standards.

BlackBelt's role

  • Template application: with five approval workflows that the bank can reuse again and again.
  • Training and joint development: BlackBelt's specialists worked together with the bank's internal developers.
  • Architecture: proven practices and frameworks for long-term, independent Mendix operation.

Unified callback management in the Contact Center

One of the first applications was callback management for customer service. After the merger, the combined customer service teams had been working with different tools – outdated applications, calendar entries and Excel spreadsheets. In the Mendix solution, every callback is a workflow task that appears in the work queue of the employee or the department, and managers can reassign tasks according to employees' availability. Because of the banking environment, the applications undergo penetration testing and strict checks.

„What we built in Mendix is a workflow engine.” – István Sponga, Head of Operations Development at MBH Bank

Pensioner Voucher application in four weeks

The 2025 government programme gave food vouchers to 2 million pensioners; the programme was announced at the end of June, so the banks had two months to set up the redemption system, while a total of 20 million vouchers were in circulation. According to the bank, MBH Bank's application was completed in 28 days, of which 18 days were development. While the large competitors asked shops to book appointments in advance, MBH Bank redeemed up to 120 vouchers on the spot, without prior notice.

„Mendix gave us the flexibility and speed to develop a complex solution under a tight deadline.” – Ádám Rozsnyai, Head of Process Automation at MBH Bank

The result

According to the figures published by MBH Bank, after two years the Mendix portfolio covers a broad range of the bank's work, from loan disbursement to tax administration:

  • Contact Center: according to MBH Bank, about 10,000 callbacks a month among 300 users; the users have merged 7 further tools into the application.
  • Application portfolio: 40 applications in production, another 10–15 in development.
  • Development time: 13 days on average for a new application.
  • Regulatory response: the Pensioner Voucher application went live in four weeks.

In 2026 the team plans to expand in-house Mendix knowledge, standardise application quality, organise business logic into separate applications, and build AI-based solutions, including Copilot-based ones.
